ITINERARIO

Pre-Departure Briefing - Cusco

The day before our Short Inca Trail Tour, we will have a briefing headed by our tour guide. This talk is given to all travelers for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. It is important to attend the briefing because, at this moment, you will learn about each moment of the trip in detail. Moreover, remember that if you have any doubts before the trip this is the perfect moment to ask. At the end, you will receive the final advice before the departure, such as what to wear during the trip, how the climate in the sites you will visit, and more!

DAY 01 - From Cusco to the 104 KM in Ollantaytambo

We will start this journey picking you up around 4:00 am from your lodging. You will meet the rest of the tour participants and our team and all together we will start a car ride to Ollantaytambo for about 2 hours. Here, we will take an early train to the 104 km, the starting point of this Inca Trail journey.

Furthermore, we will pass our ticket control, and start the hike along the Inca Trail. The hike to the archaeological site of Wiñaywayna takes about 3 hours. This site is located at 2600 meters and is believed it have been home to the ancient Machu Picchu priests. We will have lunch, and rest here before we continue walking along the Inca Trail in the afternoon. Finally, we will reach the Sun Gate, the Inca Trail’s access to the sacred site of Machu Picchu. We will enjoy the first sight of the site, and then, we will descend by bus to Aguas Calientes, where we will stay at our accommodation. We will have dinner and time to rest. You can visit the local Hot Springs as well.

DAY 02 - Visit to Machu Picchu. Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

During this day, we will wake up very early, and have breakfast in the hotel at 4:00 am. Afterward, we will go to the Machu Picchu bus station. Moreover, we will take one of the first buses to the Citadel entrance (keep in mind that it is the only bus line that operates this route and there are usually people waiting)

The second option is to climb to Machu Picchu, but this is a steep hike and takes about 2 hours. Despite your choice, we will finally get to the entrance, and we will meet our guide again. Once entering the site, you will enjoy a memorable first sight of the sunrise.

Once in the citadel, we will take a two-hour guided tour and have free time until lunchtime. Travelers who have tickets to visit Huayna Picchu, will climb that mountain for an hour and a half and take a brief time to enjoy the views.

After that time, we will meet the entire group again, and board the bus back to Aguas Calientes. Once in the little town, you can visit some optional sites such as the local Museum or the Artisan’s Market. In the afternoon, we will board a train to Ollantaytambo. After the 2-hour ride, a member of our staff will be waiting for us with a Haku Travel sign to take us back to Cusco in our private transportation. We will drop you off at your hotel at night.

That is why you must take a plastic bag to return your garbage. Also, the local communities are very open and welcoming. You can learn a lot from them along the trail.

FAQ's

What is exactly the Inca Trail?
The Inca trail is an ancient mega path constructed by the Incas, which was intended to link the whole Inca Empire. For that reason, it connects part of South America; Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia. countries The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the most popular sector. This starts in the Ollantaytambo town two hours from Cusco, and ends in Machu Picchu.

When is the best time to hike the Inca Trail?
Take into consideration that Cusco has two main seasons throughout the year.
In the first place, the dry season is the one that goes from May to October. This is very popular for visitors because you will find sunny clear days, and a beautiful blue sky every day. Nevertheless, you will also encounter cold nights and a dry atmosphere, and tours, accommodation, and other touristic services are in high season.

On the other hand, the rainy season is between November and April. This season is marked by a warm temperature, but rainy days. You will sometimes see an overcast sky, and expect some rainfalls. However, this is the low season and the tourist sites are not crowded.

If you want to experience the best of the Inca Trail with the least inconvenience, we recommend the shoulder seasons. These are April and October so that you will enjoy the nice weather and not so many visitors. Important: The Inca Trail is closed in February for maintenance, and because of the rains.

How difficult is the Inca Trail?

The Inca Trail to Machu is not so difficult, but you need to pay attention to the altitude, which will be a problem for even the most experienced hiker. For this reason, we strongly recommend adapting and taking a day to be in Cusco.

However, the hike during this tour will only take you through the Andean Jungle, and the altitude here is not so high compared to the regular itinerary.
