ITINERARIO
Predeparture briefing - Cusco
The briefing will be headed by our tour guide a day before the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu Tour. This talk is given to all travelers for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. It is important to attend the briefing because, at this moment, you will learn about each moment of the trip in detail. Moreover, remember that if you have any doubts before the trip this is the perfect moment to ask. At the end, you will receive the final advice before the departure, such as what to wear during the trip, how the climate in the sites you will visit, and more!
DAY 01 - Guided Visit to Humantay Lake. Cusco - Soraypampa - Humantay Lake
We will start the tour at 4:30 am picking you up from your hotel. Later, we will introduce the whole team and travelers group and start the ride to the first stop. We are going to travel for about two hours to the Mollepata district.
In this location, we will enjoy a delicious breakfast, and continue to Soraypampa, which is the starting point of our trek. After arriving, we will hike for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes at more than 4000 m. This is a short but demanding trek.
We will then reach the foothills of the glacier, enjoy the lake’s first glimpse, and finally, we will be rewarded with a beautiful vista of the site including the summit of the Salkantay Mountain, and the Vilcabamba Mountain Rage.
After a rest and free time of 1hr to walk around the place, we will prepare for the descent back to Soraypampa. We will stay on the campsite, have dinner and rest until the next morning.
DAY 02 - Salkantay Pass. Soraypampa - Salkantay - Huayracmachay - Chaullay
On the second day of our journey, we will wake up very early and after breakfast, we will start climbing the Salkantay pass, at 4750 masl. This will be the highest altitude on the route. From here, we can observe the beautiful valleys of the zone and the imposing snowy peaks. After that, we will arrive at the Huayracmachay village to have a well-gained lunch and recover our strength to continue hiking to the Chaullay campsite, to finally have dinner and spend the night.
DAY 03 - Descent to the Subtropical rainforest. Chaullay - Playa Sahuayaco Lucmabamba - Santa Teresa - Cocalmayo
After a heartwarming breakfast, we will start hiking through the Andes to the subtropical Cusco jungle and start enjoying a more temperate climate. During our walk, we will witness the beautiful landscapes, and tropical species, such as orchids, begonias, and birds. Continuing the journey, we will be arrive at the Sahuayaco village, where we will stop for lunch, rest for a while, and take private transport to the Santa Teresa town. We will spend the night here. Very near to this stop, the Cocalmayo Hot Springs are located and you can visit it if you want.
DAY 04 - An adventurous morning and hike to Aguas Calientes. Santa Teresa - Hidroeléctrica - Aguas Calientes
After waking up and having breakfast in the Cusco jungle, we will enjoy a zipline morning for about 2 hours. Therefore, in the company of our travel guide, we will enjoy the view of the many waterfalls. Furthermore, we will see the coca and coffee plantations on local farms.
It is time to board the train from Hidroeléctrica and we will finally reach Machu Picchu town, also known as Aguas Calientes. Then, we will continue our day exploring the magic of that little town on the Citadel’s foothills. We will spend the night in a comfortable hotel.
DAY 05 - Visit the Machu Picchu Citadel - Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
The most expected moment of the journey has come. On this day, we will experience a magical moment: watch the sunrise at Machu Picchu. First, we will wake up at around four in the morning. Then, we will have a light breakfast in our accommodation and we will go to the Machu Picchu citadel.
From here, we have two options; to take the bus (keep in mind that there is only one bus line that operates this route so it is usually people waiting) and arrive at the entrance in 30 minutes.
The second option is to climb to Machu Picchu, but this is a steep hike and takes about 2 hours. Despite your choice, we will finally get to the entrance, and we will meet our guide again. Once entering the site, you will enjoy a memorable first sight of the sunrise.
Afterward, we will take a two-hour guided tour and have free time to explore the Wonder of the World before lunchtime. If you want to visit Huayna Picchu Mountain, you need to get your ticket and climb for 1 and a half hours. At the end of the tour, we will board the shared bus to Aguas Calientes. In the town, you will have free time to walk around, get some souvenirs, and relax. Finally, we will take our train to the Ollantaytambo village. Finally, one of our team members will be waiting for you to take you to Cusco.

- Acclimate to the altitude: Since your tour will reach more than 4000 masl, you must be in Cusco at least 1 day before doing the Salkantay Trek Tour. This is recommended to avoid altitude sickness or soroche.
- Train your physical condition: You need to acquire a good physical condition, so it is recommended to have previous hikes and to have a great attitude to reach high altitudes.
- Pack smartly: Don’t forget that most of the itinerary will be on the outdoors. For that reason, you should bring what you will need only, and be prepared for sunny days and expect occasional rain depending on the season of your travel. We recommend bringing layering clothes, trekking gear, toiletries, and personal items only.
- Respect for locals and the environment: This route is home to an incredible biodiversity. Moreover, you will enjoy animal and plant species during your journey. When is the best time to do the Salkantay Trek?
