ITINERARIO

Pre-Departure Briefing - Cusco

On the day before our Classic Inca Trail To Machu Picchu tour, we will have a briefing headed by our tour guide. This talk is given to all travelers for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. It is important to attend the briefing because, at this moment, you will learn about each moment of the trip in detail. Moreover, remember that if you have any doubts before the trip this is the perfect moment to ask. At the end, you will receive the final advice before the departure, such as what to wear during the trip, how the climate in the sites you will visit, and more!

DAY 01. Cusco - 82 KM - Llaqtapata - Huayllabamba

We start this day by heading to Piskakucho, a community located in the 82 KM along the train trail. We will reach it at around 6:00 to 6:30 am on our private transportation. This is the starting point of the Inca Trail. We will begin our hike by crossing the bridge over the Urubamba River and walking along the trail in a flat terrain. Likewise, we arrive in Miskay at 2800 m altitude to overlook the impressive Llaqtapata Inca Ruins from the summit. We will continue trekking along the Kusichaka River shore, and we will be gradually climbing for about five hours until we reach Huayllabamba, a town located at 3000 m, we will camp in this place.

Along the way, we will enjoy spectacular views of the Vilcanota ridge, and get the chance to see the Veronica Mountain peak. Also, we will enjoy the biodiversity of wild flora and fauna.

DAY 02 - Reach the Warmiwañusca or Dead Woman Pass - Pacaymayo

On this day, we will experience the most difficult part of the trek. We will wake up at around 6:00 am and after breakfast, we will start climbing through an abrupt and steep ascent that stretches for 9 km. The landscape here will change from the Andes to a dry and high area with little vegetation.

The goal of the day is to reach the warmiwañusca, or dead woman Pass. For that reason, we may see llamas and alpacas grazing on the land on the way. We will also cross a cloud forest area, a habitat for different kinds of birds like hummingbirds and sparrows, and the Spectacled Bear. We recommend that your daypack is well stocked with candies, chocolates, and coca leaves for this day because that will keep a high sugar level for you, and help with altitude sickness. Immediately after the pass, we will descend into the Pacaymayo Valley at 3600 m, where we camp after 7 hours of hiking.

DAY 03. Pacaymayo - Runkurakay

This day is the longest and the most impressive in our journey. This is due to the number of archaeological sites and beautiful landscapes we will see. After our breakfast, we will trek through the forest to reach Runkurakay, here we will make a short stop to visit its archaeological site. Runkurakay is located at 3800 m and consists of a small oval structure that is believed to have served as a watchtower.

After going over the pass, we will descend towards Yanacocha and start our expedition through the cloud forest to finally arrive at Sayacmarca. This is a beautiful site with semicircular constructions that enclose at different levels.

Moreover, after an easy climb, we will arrive at the third pass, the Abra Phuyupatamarca at 3700 m. Its name means means “town over the clouds”. Here, we will appreciate the magnitude of the Incas´ ancient architecture by walking along semi-detached paths. Then. we will go through an Inca tunnel to finally arrive at the pass and site.

This is one of the most complete and best-preserved Inca sites along the Inca Trail, and it is located on the highest point of a mountain. The sacred ruins are made up of water fountains with solid foundations, and we will enjoy impressive views of the Urubamba River Valley from above. Later, we will continue our trek down the long descending stone steps until we reach Wiñaywayna, an impressive Inca site, full of terraces used for agriculture. This is the final campsite.

DAY 04: Machu Picchu and Intipunku. Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

We will wake up before sunrise, at 4:00 am. to leave Wiñaywayna and start our hiking. After one hour, we will reach the Intipunku or Sun Gate, We will enjoy the experience of looking at the sunrise over the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu from here. After this magical moment, we will descend, and 40 minutes later we will enter the citadel through the “House of the Guardians”. We will have the chance to leave our backpacks at the control point. Then, we will enjoy a complete guided tour that will take approximately two hours.

Later, you will have free time to walk around, explore the Temple of the Moon, the Inca Bridge, and even climb the Huaynapicchu Mountain, but note that there are only 400 visitors allowed per day, so if you want, you will need to book it in advance.

Take into consideration that Cusco has two main seasons throughout the year.
In the first place, the dry season is the one that goes from May to October. This is very popular for visitors because you will find sunny clear days, and a beautiful blue sky every day. Nevertheless, you will also encounter cold nights and a dry atmosphere, and tours, accommodation, and other touristic services are in high season.
