Entrancingly off the increasingly trod track, Choquequirao (“Cradle of Gold” in Quechua—“The Other Machu Picchu”, as a 2007 article in the New York Times called it) is an amazingly preserved Inca outpost, dramatically perched on a promontory nearly 1800 m / 6000 feet above the roaring Apurimac River Gorge.
Choquequirao (3.103m/10178ft), considered to be a sister city of similar significance to that of Machupicchu and built along similar lines, although harder to reach, was also presumed to have had about the same size and to have served the same religious, political and agricultural functions. However, because archaeologists long underestimated the importance of Choquequirao, the city’s existence was known for almost 300 years before the first restoration was begun in 1993 and it has only recently been accessible to nonacademics, since then quickly joining the ranks of the world’s great Lost Cities.
In this spectacular 60-km trek we drive to the charming village of Cachora, our starting point, and reach this huge archaeological complex still under cleaning and restoration process located in the surroundings of the Salkantay sacred mountain (6.271m/20569ft) and the Apurimac River canyon. The beauty of the Inca citadel, still partially covered by the weeds cumulated by the passing of centuries, its astonishing location and surrounding mountain scenery, as well as lots of Andean flora and fauna, with the chance to spot condors in its natural habitat are some of the most appreciated attractions of this program.

The Choquequirao Tour lasts 04 days which is known as the "sacred sister" of Machupicchu due to its structural and architectural similarity. Its name comes from the Aymara language ciyo meaning is means gold, and in the Quechua language k'iraw means cradle, that is to say: "cradle of gold", are the ruins of an Inca city located between the snowy Salkantay, in the province of The Convention, region of Cusco, to the south of Peru. The archaeological remains of Choquequirao are made up of buildings and terraces distributed on different levels, from the lowest level Sunch'u Pata to the highest truncated top, which was leveled and surrounded with stones to form a platform with an approximate area of 150 square meter.

DAY 1: CUSCO – CACHORA – CHIQUISCA:
We will leave Cusco (3350m/10991f) approximately at 5:30 am. First, we will head for the village Cachochoquequirao_cachorara (2850m/9350f) to meet our horsemen and the mules that will carry all the camping equipment during the expedition. Thereafter, we will continue our journey towards the pass of Capuliyoc (2800m/9186f). The trek offers a beautiful view of the mythical mountain Padreyoc, of the deep canyon and of the river Apurímac, meaning “speaking river”. Thereupon, we will descend towards the canyon’s interior named Chiquisca (1950m), where we will spend the night.


DAY 2: CHIQUISCA TO CHOQUEQUIRAO:
After breakfast, we will descend to La Playa Rosalina (1550m). From there, we will continue heading for Marampata (2850m/9350f), where we will have a beautiful view of the archeological complex of Choquequirao (3033m). Our camping site is located 25 minutes from the settlement.


DAY 3: CHOQUEQUIRAO TO CHIQUISCA:
Today we bid farewell to Choquequirau and begin our descent to the Apurimac river, crossing the bridge again and beginning the ascent to Cachora before camping for the night above the river in a small glade of trees.


DAY 4: CHIQUISCA – CACHORA RETURN TO CUSCO:
An early start today will help us to avoid the worst of the heat in the canyon and guarantee us some magnificent views of the Apurimac and the surrounding peaks. We will arrive in Cachora around lunchtime, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. Transfer to hotel.

(1) Tips for Horseman, cooks and guides are always welcome. The porters are also very grateful for a small donation, for example clothes or school equipment for their children.

  • A backpack with a change of clothes for the whole period of the trek
  • Rain gear (jacket and pants if available) or rain poncho (plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco)
  • Strong footwear, waterproof trekking boots recommended
  • Sandals or jogging shoes for a higher comfort while at camp
  • Warm clothes, including jacket, fleeces
  • Flashlight/headlamp and batteries
  • Camera and batteries (batteries consume more quickly under cold conditions)
  • Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain and cold

  • After-sun cream or hydrating cream for face and body
  • Insect repellent – minimum recommended 20% DEET – no malaria risk has been reported

OUR BOOKING POLICIES
Non-Refundable, Non-Transferable Deposits for TREKS and Short Tours
There is a $200 per person deposit needed to your trek/tour with Haku Travel. The deposit can be made through PayPal, which will incur a 5.5% PayPal merchant fee paid by the traveler or by a wire directly to our bank (Bank of America or Citibank) for free if you are a fellow account holder. All deposits are fully non-refundable and non-transferable. In the event that you need to cancel your trip, cancellation fees will be assessed as outlined below under Cancellation Policy. It is not possible to transfer your deposit to another person’s trek if cancelling, they will need to send in their own deposit.
Itineraries
If you are booking a full itinerary, including hotels, with Haku Travel, we will require 50% of the total value as a deposit. If you must CANCEL, refunds other than the non-refundable $200 deposit required for all tours, will be returned if your start date is more than 60 days away. Once you are within 60 days of your tour beginning, money will no longer be refundable.
Final Payment Terms
For all treks and small tours, final payment is due at least three days before your tour begins with Hatu Travel. This is normally paid directly in our office, but can be paid in advance by PayPal with a 5.5% fee or wire to Citibank. In the office we accept both US and Peruvian currency, any denomination but NO torn bills.
Cancellation Policy for Treks and Small Tours
Notification of cancellation must be made in writing to info@hakutravel.com. If you are within 8 weeks of your tour start date, further payment is needed as follows:
  • If you cancel 8 weeks or more days before departure: Cancellation fees equal the amount of your deposit.
  • 8 weeks to 4 weeks before departure: 60% of the total tour price is due.
  • 4 weeks to 5 days before departure: 80% of the total tour price is due.
  • 5 days to 36 hours: 90% of the total tour price is due.
  • 36 hours or less before departure: 100% of the total price is due.
We charge these fees because there are many expenses that Hahu Travel pays to set up these tours. There are no exceptions unfortunately, but if you need a letter for your insurance company to help recover some of the cost, we would be happy to supply one.
Inca Trail Permits
Inca Trail permits are 100% non-refundable, non-transferable. Permits are issued in the name and with the passport number of the trekker and cannot be transferred to anyone else under any circumstances.
